AVG have been up to their old tricks to get people to buy a copy of their free antivirus.
You need to remove the old copy before installing the new one or you may find your computer doesn't boot afterwards.
You will need to make sure your user has administrative rights or the installation may fail.
Start by visiting free.avg.com and download the basic version. This is the one on the left of the screen.
Once you have downloaded the basic version for free, you need to remove the old version.
On XP:
- Click on Start and choose Control Panel (Settings then Control Panel for classic menu)
- Double click Add/Remove Programs (you need to be in classic view to see this, not category view)
- Click on AVG Free and choose Remove
On Vista/7:
- Click on Star and choose Control Panel
- Double click Programs and features
- Click on AVG Free and choose Uninstall from the top
You will need to restart your computer.
Once your computer is restarted, you need to run the installer. If you are using later versions of Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, the installer can be found in a folder called Downloads in Documents (My Documents in XP)
Double click the installer and make sure you choose the basic version and not the recommended version. The recommended version is only a 15 day free trial whereas the basic has no time limit.
Check the box to agree with the licence agreement
Clear the box when it asks about Toolbar as it will change your home page to Yahoo.
Follow through the steps to the end and it should finish properly.
If AVG doesn't install, it may need the AVG remover or the reset access tool run on it and the installation process started again. The AVG Remover will remove any stale files left behind by the previous version(s) and the reset access tool makes sure AVG can access the right parts of the computer's registry.
