Vitamin D have produced a piece of software that enables you to use your webcam as a security camera. They have a free version for a single camera and a paid version for higher resolutions and multiple cameras.

You can set up areas to be watched and when movement happens, the camera records what movement appears on the camera. You can also tell the software to ignore certain sized objects such as your cat, so it will only react when an object larger than that size moves into view.

In order to deliver a better product, Paint.Net 3.5.5 beta drops support for XP service pack 1 and 2, as well as Vista RTM (before service pack 1) keeping service pack 3 support for now.

Open Office is a very powerful piece of free office software and it does everything that Microsoft Office offers. One of the big features that a business needs is the ability to mail merge documents and labels. 

Open Office handles mail merge differently to Microsoft Office, since you create your mail merged documents from a toolbar in Microsoft Office, you print them to a file in Open Office.

When I use facebook, I use Firefox as my web browser and use the AdBlock Plus add-on; the FlashBlock add-on and the GreaseMonkey Add-on with the fbpurity script.

AdBlock Plus effectively eliminates the ads from facebook, so you don't see any advertising on the site. FlashBlock allows you to choose which flash video will play on your computer, so you don't have to see annoying animated ads.

GreaseMonkey is a scripting system that allows you to use custom scripts to do things and the fbpurity script does wonders to hide apps and extras, such as who has added whom; who has joined which group etc. You can also hide suggestions, sponsored and connect with friends.

I think its more to do with being responsible, if you get a message from a friend that looks suspicious or out of character, there is a reason for this, it may not be them. It could be a virus that has sent it.

TweetMyPC is remote control for your computer. My computer spend a lot of time online and a lot of the time I'm busy elsewhere and so I forget to close my facebook and so I get people message me thinking I'm online when I'm not there.

With TweetMyPC I can use my phone and text twitter (or simply use the twitter program on it) a custom command that will close my browser, lock the screen or shutdown my computer without being near it. 

You need to create a dedicated twitter account for your computer so you can message it with commands.

Dropbox is an interesting program. It installs on your computer(s) and when you put something in the dropbox folder on one computer, it will be in the dropbox folder on another of your computers.

For example, say you have worked on a word processing document on your laptop in one location and want to access it on a desktop at home, you drag it in the dropbox.

If you want to access your files from anywhere, you simply go to their website and you can access the files in your dropbox on a web page. You can even email a link to your dropbox to someone else, say for a photo album.

The first 2GB is free, you do have to have internet access in those locations for dropbox to share your files, the files are shared securely. They charge $9.99p/m for 50GB space and $19.99p/m for 100GB space.

One of the most useful pieces of software for netbooks that don't have DVD drives is Alcohol Soft's Alcohol 120% and 52%.

Alcohol 120% enables you to create a virtual DVD drive as well as make DVD images for copying to a memory stick or mounting on a virtual DVD drive. You can also burn DVD images to blank DVDs if you have a DVD writer.

Note that the virtual DVD drive will play CD, DVD and Blu-ray disc images.

Alcohol 52% is free, since it only mounts images. Alcohol 120% is available as a 15 day trial and is available half price 39€ instead of 70€.

AVG have been up to their old tricks to get people to buy a copy of their free antivirus. 

You need to remove the old copy before installing the new one or you may find your computer doesn't boot afterwards.

You have probably sent a word document to a friend only to find they can't open the file since you have sent it with Office 2007 and they have an older version. 

1. Go to the flag in the circle and click. You will see two options on the bottom right of the menu.
2. Click on Word Options. 
3. On the left side, click on Save
4. On the right side, change the drop down box to WORD 97-2003 .doc
5. Click OK

Now whenever you save files in Word, you will save them in a format that people with older versions can open them.

The same goes for Excel and Powerpoint.
